North Eastern India is rich in different varieties of flora and fauna.A number of different types of citrus fruits is found here.One such is the Star fruit or Carambola.

Star Fruit or Carambola.(Fruit beneficial for liver, blood glucose,cholesterol)

   Starfruit or Carambola is known as 'kordoi' in Assamese and 'kamrakh' in Hindi.It is commonly seen in the orchard all over Assam.It is also consumed throughout South east  Asia.
The fruit initially appear green in colour and turns yellow when ripen. The Carambola tree typically produces the most fruit from April to June and October to December. The fruit has distinctive ridges running down its sides. When cut in cross -section, it resembles a star, hence its name.

The entire fruit is edible. The flesh is crunchy and extremely juicy. It can also be cooked and made into relishes and preserves. However, people like the juice of the fruit, which is very refreshing in summer.

A very significant fact about this fruit in the region is the use of the star fruit to prevent jaundice. Seasonal consumption of star fruit is proven to be very beneficial to prevent any diseases of the liver. Locally juice of Carambola is given to patient suffering from jaundice.


                       Scientifically, the star fruit is found to be a good source of various minerals and vitamins. Some nutritional values of star fruits are-
                           

       
1) Star fruits are rich source of natural antioxidants such as- L- ascorbic acid ( vitamin               C) and Gallic acid, which aid in scavenging reactive oxidative species.

2) It is a good source of magnesium, potassium, phosphorus as well as B-carotene. Also the presence of antioxidants like iron, zinc and manganese in the fruit aid in strengthening the immune system.

3) High amount of fibres in the fruit aids in absorbing glucose  and retarding the glucose diffusion into the blood stream. As a result, it helps in controlling blood glucose concentration.

4) The starfruit intake also exhibit hypocholesterolemic and hypolipidaemic effect as it enhances the removal of cholesterol, lipid and bile acid through the excrement.
